RESTORE: MONMOUTH ACADEMY "Amaracus"
ACADEMY HISTORY Discover
Monmouth Academy was incorporated in 1809. The original two story wood structure burned to the ground in 1851. In 1855 the existing brick building with belfry was constructed by Owens & Ham. In 1914, the rear portion was added.
For many years the Trustees of Monmouth Academy governed the school and hired the headmaster. That practice ended in the 70s with the formation of the school board. Prior to 1976, Monmouth Academy was a tuition school for surrounding towns.
Arthur J Chick was principal of Monmouth Academy from the beginning of the century until his death in 1943. Recently the blueprints for the 1914 addition were discovered in a Chick family home. These will be very helpful in the restoration process and discovering the original mortar mix in the detailed specs for the building will help the masonry work move forward.
